Thoughts of a Nevada Hunter

Well I thought I would try to blog regularly so this week will talk about the rash op poaching news alerts showing up on the NDOW site. This is not good for hunters and if anyone has information please report. I understand times are tough but these are animal left to waste so it’s even worse. People are gunning for fun.

Well its cold outside which mean the fur hunters should be working on getting some nice pelts. I plan on going out the next few weeks so we will see how the weather helps shape up these dogs out there.

Thinking of reviewing some hunting products, any request on items I should test out?

Every one be safe on the hunting trail.

Hunting Coyotes

So do we call this hunting or should we call it exterminating. I think Nevada is missing a big revenue stream here in not charging a special permit to hunt yotes. But I have mixed views. First it’s nice to have a game species that does not require additional fees to peruse. But as a hunter I do not like the idea of people out there blasting a way that do not have a hunting license. Two reasons on this thought, first lack of hunting safety makes it dangerous some guys are just blasting away and I really do not like it when they come into an area I am chasing birds or other games and shoot up the country side. The second reason is these non hunters are representing us in a way and give a bad name for us hunters that follow the laws. So let’s have this debate.

Should NDOW require at least a hunter safety card when hunting coyotes? Yes or No.

NDOW Article (Field Care Key)

All right NDOW just posted this article:
http://ndow.org/about/news/pr/100808_table_fare.shtm

It recommends to filed dress your birds before putting them in your game bag. (Who does this?) Its a great idea but when chasing chuckar not sure if I want to waste time cleaning a bird when I should be chasing them.  I think I will try it next time and see how it goes. However there are two things I have issue with in the article.

1. Hanging game to cool is not an option in Southern Nevada not exactly a large number of trees or other tall items to hang game from. Except for the occasional barbed wire fence. (Hey this is an opportunity I think I will make a small game hanger to sale. Future Article)

2. They give no real how - to field dress small game or link to how to dress small game. So here you go:

Birds:

A. Pluck the feathers from the lower breast and abdomen
B. Cut a slit at the base of the breast (Where you removed the belly feathers) through the skin.
C. Reach in and pull out the entrails. It helps to bend the bird back a little.
D. (Optional Should be done before putting them in the cooler at least) Pluck the bird and remove the head.

Animals:

Note: I like to gut them after I skin them. However this is not a good idea for the game bag always.

A. Basically cut open abdomen and remove entrails.
B. Rince out inside with water and shake dry. (Put them in the game bag)
Later skin them before you put them in the cooler.
