All right NDOW just posted this article: http://ndow.org/about/news/pr/100808_table_fare.shtm
It recommends to filed dress your birds before putting them in your game bag. (Who does this?) Its a great idea but when chasing chuckar not sure if I want to waste time cleaning a bird when I should be chasing them. I think I will try it next time and see how it goes. However there are two things I have issue with in the article.
1. Hanging game to cool is not an option in Southern Nevada not exactly a large number of trees or other tall items to hang game from. Except for the occasional barbed wire fence. (Hey this is an opportunity I think I will make a small game hanger to sale. Future Article)
2. They give no real how - to field dress small game or link to how to dress small game. So here you go:
Birds:
A. Pluck the feathers from the lower breast and abdomen B. Cut a slit at the base of the breast (Where you removed the belly feathers) through the skin. C. Reach in and pull out the entrails. It helps to bend the bird back a little. D. (Optional Should be done before putting them in the cooler at least) Pluck the bird and remove the head.
Animals:
Note: I like to gut them after I skin them. However this is not a good idea for the game bag always.
A. Basically cut open abdomen and remove entrails. B. Rince out inside with water and shake dry. (Put them in the game bag) Later skin them before you put them in the cooler.
